Mojave are a Native American people indigenous to the Colorado River Indian Reservation in the Mojave Desert including territory within the borders of California, Arizona, and Nevada. Edward Curtis was searching for a backer for his ambitious project. He showed this image of Mosa, a young Mojave girl to financier J.P. Morgan and immediately won him over.
